National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), Altermidya People’s Media Network and students of UP College of Mass Communication held a Black Friday Protest for Press Freedom and Digital Rights at the Plaridel Hall in UP Diliman today.
The protest was also part of the countdown to the 10th year anniversary of the Ampatuan massacre where 38 journalists were killed on November 23, 2009.
The incident was known as the single deadliest attacks on journalists in the world at the time and also the worst election-related violence in the country where a total of 52 civilians were killed.
Alternative media outfits subjected to cyber attacks in the form distributed denial of service (DDoS) also launched their #MirrorUs campaign.
RSF’s five-year old campaign Operation Collateral Freedom mirrored 22 media outlets that are blocked in their countries.
Bulatlat and Kodao Productions have experienced persistent cyber attacks since December last year and is now part of the website mirroring campaign of international media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
