It has been almost 45 days since the lockdown in Metro Manila, confusingly disguised as community quarantine with sugar-glazed prefixes over prefixes—a situation that also prevented music gatherings and will continue to prevent it even under the “new normal.” We were of course told this is a quarantine—but well, even most of the positive cases have been sent home if their symptoms are mild and have not been isolated from their communities and mass testing is still a dream, now only the euphemistic “expanded” testing.

But like many creative souls trapped under lockdown, musicians found ways to make the most of this situation by enhancing their own skills, sharing their musical knowledge through teaching online or performing solo or in concerts on social media live streams. And there are some altruistic artists who utilize their talent to help the many affected people during this time of imposed paralysis with crowdfunders through online livestream concerts, “battle of the bands”-themed online game tournaments, disaster relief drives and advocacy campaigns.

One organization joining the efforts for a campaign and music drive is none other than the organization founded by Philippine people’s music legends, Musicians for Peace. The group has been making content to advocate democratization amidst the draconian measures imposed within the lockdown and the lockdown itself—we need to keep speaking out and keep being heard. And we can do this also through music.

The group launched #LockdownBarsChallenge, #LockdownJams, #MusikaPanipi and the composition of original songs performed and/or publicized through social media that engaged a lot of artists to participate on many of their online activities. Read on, listen and jam with Musicians for Peace.
