The health sector, leading the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, suffered another loss with the passing of Dr. Francisco Avelino Siy Lukban. He died last March 25 due to the said disease.

Dr. Lukban was a geriatric cardiologist in Capitol Medical Center.

In a statement released on March 29, the University of the Philippines Manila paid tribute to the late alumnus, a member of the UP College of Medicine Class of 1982.

“Dr. Lukban was a brilliant academician with a sharpness for details and an eloquence for principled viewpoints,” the statement read.

Dr. Kiko, as he was known, was well-loved and respected by his patients and colleagues.

“He was a geriatric cardiologist who practiced holistic healing of patients, great mentor, and trusted and loyal friend to many,” the statement shared.

The late Dr. Lukban dedicated his life in service to his countrymen and “was not afraid to die (like most UP doctors, he was active during the Martial Law days) and would have loved to volunteer as a frontline physician in PGH in these trying times.”

Dr. Kiko Lukban is survived by his wife, Dr. Marissa, their children Laureen and husband Marvyn, Claudine, and Leland; and grandson Noah.

In a Facebook post shared by his wife, Dr. Marissa Lukban shared “He has no awards or positions to boast of. But everyone who worked with him in Capitol Medical Center (his second home) knows his academic brilliance, his strict adherence to protocol and excellence, and his great eloquence in airing out his principles and views.”

Dr. Marissa expressed gratitude to the management of the Capitol Medical Center and the members of the UP College of Medicine Class of 1982 and 1983.

As of writing, twelve doctors have died due to Covid-19 according to the Philippine Medical Association.

The Department of Health has reported 343 new cases bringing the country’s total of Covid-19 cases to 1,418. A total of 71 people died and 42 have recovered from the disease.
