An estimated 500 families are affected by the demolition operations in Caloocan which started on May 26. Residents of Calaanan Compound in Barangay 86 were unprepared as demolition crew tore down their homes.

Weeks prior the demolition, an offer amounting to P60,000 pesos was offered by SMI Development Corporation /Ramon and Natividad Nisce in exchange for residents’ surrender to any claim to the land.

SMI Development Corporation is headed by tycoon Alfredo Yao. He ranks as the 16th richest man in the Philippines with a net worth of $1 billion, according to business news website Forbes.com.

Despite the settlement offered by the private claimants, majority of the residents refused to waive their rights to the land.

According to village councilor Francis Tio, only 50 homes are scheduled to be demolished, “What they did was illegal. There are still cases pending in court regarding the issue of land ownership,” added Tio.

Many families camped out at the outskirts of Calaanan compound, as local government has no relocation site nor temporary shelter to offer residents whose homes they tore down. They are given until May 28 to vacate the premises.
