At least four persons were killed and 42 people were hurt when an explosion rocked through a gymnasium at Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City on Sunday, Dec. 3.
The explosion occurred at 7:30 a.m. while a mass was being held at the gym attended by students and teachers.
In a statement, MSU said “it is deeply saddened and appalled by the act of violence.”
“We unequivocally condemn in the strongest possible terms this senseless and horrific act and extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families,” the statement read.
MSU also vowed support and assistance to those affected by the tragedy.
“Our immediate priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of all constituents, particularly our Christian community,” it continued.
“We are aware of the heightened sensitivities and concerns that arise from such a tragic event, and we want to assure everyone that we are taking every measure possible to protect our students, faculty, and staff.”
MSU said it suspended classes “until further notice” and deployed additional security to safeguard its campus.
‘Devastating’
In a separate statement, the Bangsamoro Government said it is “saddened and troubled by the devastating news.”
“We urge the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice,” Bangsamoro Government Chief Minister Ahob Ebrahim said.
“The Bangsamoro government is fully committed to supporting and cooperating with the investigative agencies to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their wicked actions,” Ebrahim added.
Ebrahin also urged the public to remain vigilant and “report to proper authorities any suspicious activities or personalities.”
Meanwhile, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. vowed to bring the perpetrators of the Marawi bombing to justice.
Marcos said the government is “working closely” with the regional government of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and all concerned local government units for their swift response to the bombing.
