In a flood-prone community in Brgy. Doña Imelda, 53-year-old Marlene Castro along with her family chose to rebuild their old shanty near the San Juan River where they have lived for the past 35 years.

Seven years ago, their family was relocated to Pandi, Bulacan. However, due to limited job opportunities in the province, Marlene’s family decided to return to their home in the city.

Marlene also shared that many relocated families have also returned to Brgy. Doña Imelda. Like her situation, many could not keep up with the rising costs of rent which initially started at P200 per month but has now reached P700.

Currently, they put up a small sari-sari store to support their livelihood.
